Sue the school

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The U.S. government sued Philadelphia's school district for religious discrimination on Wednesday for demanding that a veteran Muslim police officer trim his beard.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court by the Department of Justice, said the nation's eighth-largest school district passed a grooming policy in 2010 that mandated beards on police and security officers be no longer than one-quarter of an inch (6.35 mm).

The officer in question, Siddiq Abu-Bakr, nu skin keeps an untrimmed beard longer than one-quarter of an inch in adherence to his Islamic faith, the suit said.

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to decide whether prison officials in Arkansas may prohibit inmates from growing beards in accordance with their religious beliefs.

In the Philadelphia case, Abu-Bakr has maintained an untrimmed beard for his 27 years with the district "without evidence that the maintenance of an uncut beard has interfered with his job performance nuskin hong kong," a Justice Department statement said.

The statement said that when Abu-Bakr told his supervisor that he could not cut his beard because of his beliefs, he was issued a written reprimand.

Abu-Bakr, who is still with the district, filed a charge of religious discrimination with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The government's lawsuit is seeking an injunction that would force the district to develop new cardinal manchester, non-discriminatory grooming policies. It also seeks unspecified damages.

A representative for the school district was not immediately available for comment. The district employs 16,827 people.

No longer selling Chobani

The grocery chain says it is phasing Chobani Greek Yogurt out of its stores in early 2014 - a decision linked to its pledge to phase out foods that use genetically modified ingredients.

Whole Foods has lost its taste for Chobani.

The natural and organic grocery chain said Wednesday that it will be phasing Chobani Greek Yogurt out of its stores in early 2014 to make room for other products.

Part of the decision might be fueled by Whole Foods' push to phase out foods that use genetically modified ingredients. But it's also about offering more exclusive and organic products hong kong massage. Chobani is now available in most supermarkets.

Whole Foods Market Inc. said Wednesday in a statement that it is committed to offering shoppers the widest variety of high-quality products possible, including items shoppers can't find anywhere else. And as the national demand for Greek yogurt has grown, the company says the number of conventional Greek yogurt options has multiplied.

"Whole Foods Market challenged its Greek yogurt suppliers to create unique options for shoppers to enjoy — including exclusive flavors, non-GMO options and organic choices," the company said in a statement. "At this time, Chobani has chosen a different business model."

Whole Foods, based in Austin, Texas but with stores across the country, g-suite cardinalcarries six national brands and a number of regional brands.

Greek yogurt, known for its thick texture, tart taste and high protein content, has surged in popularity in recent years. It now accounts for more than a third of the U.S. yogurt market, up from just 1 percent in 2007, according to a report by Bernstein Research.

Chobani, which is the top Greek yogurt brand in the U.S., says its products are not organic but use only natural ingredients. But some advocacy groups have urged the company to shift to non-GMO sources as food for its dairy cows.

"Though we have limited distribution within Whole Foods, they have been a wonderful partner of ours over the years," Chobani said in a statement. "We know our fans love buying our products in their stores and we hope to continue our partnership moving forward ."

This setback follows Chobani's recall earlier this year of some of its Greek yogurt cups due to a mold contamination.

City Administrator Bob Jenne called the police response a "judgment call." Jenne said Thursday that he is waiting to review a police report from the fire.

Emily Miller said the police response directed at her brother-in-law was "heartless."

Jenne said the fire started in an electrical outlet in the rear recreation room where Riley's parents fell asleep watching television. The NSA spying activities

Hundreds of people demonstrated on Capitol Hill in Washington against the U.S. government's online surveillance programs.

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of protesters marched on Capitol Hill in Washington on Saturday to protest the U.S. government's online surveillance programs g-suite cardinal manchester, whose vast scope was revealed this year by former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden.

People carried signs reading: "Stop Mass Spying," "Thank you, Edward Snowden" and "Unplug Big Brother" as they gathered at the foot of the Capitol to demonstrate against the online surveillance by the National Security Agency.

The march attracted protesters from both ends of the political spectrum as liberal privacy advocates walked alongside members of the conservative Tea Party movement in opposition to what they say is unlawful government spying on Americans.

"I consider myself a conservative and no conservative wants their government collecting information on them and storing it and using it," said Michael Greene, one of the protesters.

"Over the past several months, we have learned so much about the abuses (of privacy) that are going on and the complete lack of oversight and the mass surveillance into every detail of our lives. And we need to tell Congress that they have to act," said another protester, Jennifer Wynne.

The event was organized by a coalition known as "Stop Watching Us" that consists of some 100 public advocacy groups and companies, g-suite in oldham including the American Civil Liberties Union, privacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation, Occupy Wall Street NYC and the Libertarian Party.

The groups have been urging Congress to reform the legal framework supporting the NSA's secretive online data gathering since Snowden's disclosure of classified information about the programs that are designed to gather intelligence about potential foreign threats.

The Obama administration and many lawmakers have defended the NSA programs as crucial in protecting U.S. national security and helping thwart past militant plots. They have also said the programs are carefully overseen by Congress and the courts.

Snowden's disclosures have raised concerns that NSA surveillance may span not just foreign, but domestic online and phone communication.

"We are calling on Congress to take immediate action to halt this surveillance and provide a full public accounting of the NSA's and the FBI's data collection programs," Stop Watching Us said in a letter addressed to members of Congress posted online, g-suite cardinal calling for a reform of the law known as the Patriot Act.

That law marked its 12th anniversary on Saturday. It was passed in 2001 to improve anti-terrorism efforts and is now under scrutiny by privacy advocates who say it allows "dragnet" data gathering.

"Our representatives in Congress tell us this is not surveillance. They're wrong," Snowden said in a statement before Saturday's rally. Wanted in the United States on espionage charges, he is now in temporary asylum in Russia.

His latest disclosures showed that the United States may have tapped the phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, adding to the growing outrage against U.S. data-gathering practices abroad and prompting a phone call between Merkel and President Barack Obama.
